(Salvia) Sages are rich in volatile oils which will vary from species to species thus producing a wide range of aromas.S.officinalis (common sage) has been cultivated since medieval times and had a reputation for promoting longevity.It has medicinal and culinary uses.Plant in a sunny location in light dry soil.Ideal for pots and tubs (keep some by the kitchen door). Harvest regularly to keep the plants bushy. Smell the plants here; the different aromas are quite marked some smell like fruit (pineapple sage). There are sages with delightful coloured leaves, painted sage and tricolour sage;and some have lovely flowers-Clary sage a tall biennial is grown commercially for its ‘muscatel oil’ used as perfume fixative and the young leaves in wine of the Rhine.
